ArtHEALS is the primary program under our ArtReach umbrella which encompasses all educational programming on and off-site. ArtHEALS programming employs artist-led exercises and art-making to address specific symptoms of trauma and mental health challenges.

ArtHEALS teaches coping strategies and exercises for participants to employ when they are experiencing symptoms on their own.  There is great and growing need within our region to address trauma.

About 6 out of every 100 people will have PTSD at some point in their lives or 12 million adults in the U.S. during a given year. This is a small portion of those who have gone through a trauma. Trauma is not restricted by age, gender, race, or socioeconomic status It is estimated that 30% of first responders develop behavioral health conditions including, depression and PTSD, as compared with 20% in the general population.

A high proportion of nursing home residents have a significant mental disorder, with estimates ranging from 65% to 91%. Despite the prevalence of mental illness other than dementia in nursing homes, nursing home staff are often ill equipped to serve residents with mental illness.

Up to 80% of children in foster care have significant mental health issues, compared to approximately 18-22% of the general population. Factors contributing to the mental and behavioral health of children and youth in foster care includes the history of complex trauma, frequently changing situations and transitions, broken family relationships, inconsistent and inadequate access to mental health services.  In Taylor County alone, the number of children in foster care has risen from 217 in 2011 to over 850 in 2020.  These children and families are at high risk for trauma related mental illness.
